Cap-Haitien checkers player takes championship in regional tournament
Over the weekend, Cap-Haitien’s Sadrack Lambert captured the checkers championship, capping off a regional tournament organized by the Northeast Checkers League (LNEJD), according to Ticket Magazine.
The tournament featured 12 players from Cap-Haitien, Fort-Liberté and Ouanaminthe and was held in the border town better known for frontier disputes. Organizers said the competition aims to enhance the beauty of this game in the northern area and help draw more practitioners of this sport.
“At the international level, my goal is to win the 2024 Pan American Games for my country,” Lambert, a native of Terrier Rouge, told the magazine. “In addition, I also want to become an International Grand Master (GMI).”
“At first, my parents didn’t want me to play,” confessed the man who loves language sciences. “They feared that games would distract me from studies.”
He added that Checkers competitions — where he earns 30,000 gourdes to 35,000 gourdes on average — have helped make ends meet.
