The Haitian Times have gathered a list of in-person and virtual events that are commemorating the 22nd year of Haitian Heritage Month. The Haitian Times itself will host a virtual community conversation on May 18 starting from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Here’s a list of the events:

Saturday, May 1, 2021 11am-5pm

Opening Ceremony 12:30-1:30pm

Little Haiti Cultural Center    

Re-opening of the Caribbean markettypically, the event host leaders in the community as well as arts and social institutions. Refreshments are provided, and artist perform. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the guest list will be restricted to and the event will be broadcasted live on different social media platforms to increase participation opportunities. Souke Kò Ou: Little Haiti Gets Fit

In an effort to bring awareness to these health issues in the community, LHCC will facilitate outdoor dance aerobics classes that feature Afro Caribbean music and themes. To learn more about this program, click here.

Caribbean Market Day- Creole Culinary Classics Cook Off

Two award-winning celebrity chefs will be invited to the LHCC to have a cook off featuring Haitian culinary classic dishes. An award will be provided to the winning chef. Local Haitian American influencers will be invited to judge the competition. The event will be broadcasted live on social media platforms. Local Global – Open Gallery: Virtual Artist Talks

Join Marie Vickles, curator of Local Global, as she talks live with a selection of featured artists from the exhibition as they discuss their artwork, and what inspires them to create. This program starts with an overview of the exhibition at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex gallery with local artists joining in on live IG discussions from their studios. This virtual session is designed to introduce the Kreyól language to beginners or refresh your memory if you have not been practicing enough! Join us for an afternoon of free flowing conversations, performances and more as we celebrate Haitian Heritage month and all that Haiti has inspired in the Caribbean and beyond.  Talks with artists, performances and open studios on the campus of the Little Haiti Cultural Complex and adjacent cultural partners of the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance and IPC Art Space provide the perfect setting for an inspired afternoon of art and culture. Featured exhibitions include “Local Global” in the gallery at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex curated by Marie Vickles that is presented in tandem with a large-scale outdoor exhibition “Contemporary Visual Expression”, curated by Edouard Duval-Carrié. Little Haiti will celebrate its 5th birthday as officially being named a heritage neighborhood in the City of Miami. City of Miami officials will be invited to make a presentation at the cultural center as well as rename some of the buildings and rooms at the cultural center for either Sponsor organizations or historical figures. Children from the community will be invited to participate in a story telling activity and will receive a creole/English book

Haitian fashion designers will be invited to produce a spectacular fashion show in the courtyard of the LHCC. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase clothes and accessories at the event. Attendance will be limited due to COVID-19.
