France tries to reinstate slavery in the whole island, with Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte sending tens of thousands of troops to defeat Louverture and his “rebel generals.” The latter prevailed, trouncing the French in the grandiose Bataille de Vertières on November 17, 1803.
