Haiti Election Results Spark Outrage

Outrage was sparked among some, after Haiti’s presidential election preliminary results were announced on Nov. 5. The top two finishers in the first round was PHTK’s Jovenel Moise, with 32 percent of the vote, and LAPEH’s Jude Celestin with 25 percent of the vote, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced at a press conference.

Haiti Election Preliminary Results Announced

PORT-AU-PRINCE -The preliminary results for the Haiti presidential elections are in with Jovenel Moise and Jude Celestin moving on to the next round. The results were announced nearly an after hour it’s intended start time, with some speculation that a change in announcement location delayed the release of the results.

President Michel Martelly-backed Jovenel Moise took the lead with 32 percent of the vote, followed by Jude Celestin with 25 percent, and Moise Jean Charles with 14 percent.

Preliminary presidential elections results are postponed until Nov.5, the Provisional Electoral Council, which goes by the French acronym CEP, announced late Tuesday night. The results were originally to be released on Nov.3, however due to findings from a special commission established to document voter complaints, the results were delayed.

Disorder Amid Haiti Elections

PORT-AU- PRINCE – Voting was off to a slow start on Sunday, with some polling sites opening nearly four hours after their anticipated start time. At the Ruelle Vaillant polling station, lines with dozens of people were wrapped around the infamous voting site, where several journalists were killed during the 1987 elections.

Tensions escalated quickly at the Elie Dubois High School polling station in downtown as lines grew, and voters became frustrated with the lack of organization and communication from election officials.
