Haitian-Americans lean on professional connections to support earthquake relief

Teaming up with about 80 other people, including Haitian-Americans in New York City and community leaders in Les Cayes, Damus created a South Haiti Relief Effort group. The grassroots coalition has communicated and shared financial reports via WhatsApp, raising more than $11,000 in total from UFT and other individual donors to fund tarps and tents to provide shelter in southwestern Haiti. Damus said the latest shipment of tents arrived on Oct. 8.
