The Haitian Times (–an English-language digital news publication based in Brooklyn, New York–endeavors to provide nuanced coverage of Haiti, chronicle the journey of Haitians in America and elevate emerging journalists into skilled, ethical practitioners of the trade. We are currently seeking a few freelance reporters in South Florida to write about the Haitian Arts & Culture scene.

As a freelancer, you will pitch, report and write compelling stories regularly about music, the arts, religion, the arts business, fashion and food in Florida’s Haitian communities. You will helpour readers better understand what’s happening in entertainment and lifestyles linked to Haitian culture through in-depth stories that spark new conversations.

● Write short stories about the Haitian arts and culture scene (i.e., events, artists,
musicians, chefs, influencers) or enterprise pieces exploring a topic or person in depth
● Interview people in English or Creole (with interpretation assistance, if necessary)
● Research, analyze data and fact-check information to support stories
● Work with editors to conceptualize pitches, coverage plans and revisions
● Shoot photos, record simple videos and collect/source other visual assets
● With the social team, amplify stories across platforms and audiences

● Strong interest in Haitian cultural traditions and innovations
● A self-starter with a strong drive for storytelling who can connect with subjects and place
topics into broader themes as warranted
● Feature writing, audio or video skills
● Experience with WordPress (or other CMS) and social media platforms
● Fluency in Creole, SEO knowledge, journalism background preferred–but not required
● Ability to connect with the editorial team in a virtual / remote newsroom

● $150-$250 for shorter stories, $500-$750 for enterprise, commensurate with experience
and the story pitched
