Newmont Mining Corp. Purchases Canadian Mining Company’s Interests In Haiti

A subsidiary of mining giant Newmont Mining Corp. recently acquired a Canadian company’s joint-venture interests in Haiti, the company announced on Nov. 2.

Vancouver-based Eurasian Minerals Inc. said it sold its interests covering six exploration sites in northern Haiti to the Newmont subsidiary for about 4 million USD and a 0.5 percent royalty.

All Saints Day and All Souls Day, celebrated on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, are important days in Haiti, particularly for those who practice Vodou. On Nov. 2 many practitioners flocked to cemeteries throughout Haiti bringing with them offerings of food, dark rum, as well as, candles to commemorate the country’s Vodou Festival of the Dead Fête Guédé.

On Sunday Nov. 1, Maryse Noel, general director of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Industries, visited the town of Comendador at the Dominican border to assess progress for the preparation of the 6th Bi-national Ecotourism Production Fair. It will take place November 7-15, 2015. This event is significant as it contributes to strengthening relations between the Haitian and Dominican people.

An invitation to the third edition of the Solidarity Meeting Cuba-Haiti “Antenor Firmin” was extended to all Haitians, friends of Haiti and those in the Diaspora by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP). The meeting is scheduled for January 4 -11, 2016 in a few Cuban cities including Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Camaguey, also known as the “The City of Haitian Traditions.”
