The Haitian Times, an English language digital news publication is looking for a reporting intern. This is an opportunity for a junior, senior or graduate student to hone his or her writing and reporting skills.

Be part of a dynamic team covering one of the most exciting communities in New York City. The successful candidate will be an energetic, curious and enthusiasm to learn and be willing to be out of their comfort zone. No Haitian Kreyol required. Knowledge of how to write social media posts, create newsletters and be familiar with Hootesuite is recommended.

General Assignment Reporter Job Description


The Haitian Times, an English-language digital news publication based in Brooklyn, NY, is
seeking a General Assignment Reporter to join its team in New York full time. Our mission is
to provide nuanced reporting about Haiti, chronicle the journey of Haitian Americans across the
U.S., and elevate emerging journalists into highly skilled, ethical practitioners of the trade.
As a General Assignment Reporter, you will pitch, report and write compelling stories about
Haitian communities in the New York City area, primarily in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and
parts of New Jersey to help us tell our audience how Haitians are navigating life in America.
Occasionally, you will take reporting trips to other parts of the U.S. where Haitians are settling
and assimilating.
The ideal candidate has a passion for news and the ability to work collaboratively with team
members in a fast-paced environment. To be successful, you must be a critical thinker and have
solid interviewing, research and writing skills. You must also be able to create multi-media
packages to accompany stories on haitiantimes.com and social platforms.
This full-time position is filled with opportunities to explore a variety of topics, people and
skillsets. It’s ideal for an entry-level reporter with some professional experience seeking to
become firmly mid-level..


Responsibilities
● Write longer enterprise pieces on occasion analyzing and exploring broader themes
● Deliver three (3) stories per week – one small, medium and large – in English
● Travel to various Haitian communities to report from those enclaves
● Interview people in English or Creole, with interpretation assistance if necessary
● Conduct research and data analysis as required to support stories
● Work with editors on pitches, plans for coverage and revisions
● Prioritize breaking news as needed to report, edit and post stories within moments
● Take / develop photos, videos and other visual assets, or source them for proper use
● Post stories via WordPress
● Work with the social team to amplify content on The Haitian Times platforms


Qualifications
● Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, newsroom
● A self-starter with a strong drive for enterprise and a hunger to get published
● Experience with Google Drive, WordPress (or other CMS) and social media platforms
● Basic photo capturing and editing skills
● Fluency in Creole, HTML knowledge preferred, but not required
● A strong journalism or writing background is preferred

Florida Arts & Culture Reporter Job Description

seeking a part-time Arts & Culture Reporter to cover such happenings primarily in South
Florida. Our mission is to provide nuanced views of the news about Haiti, chart the stories of
Haitian Americans across the U.S., and uplift journalistic talent from all backgrounds to become
passionate, ethical practitioners of the trade.
As the Florida Arts & Culture Reporter, you will pitch, report and write compelling stories
about music, arts, fashion and food topics in the Haitian community. At times, you will create
multi-media packages to accompany stories on haitiantimes.com and other digital properties.
To be successful, you must have intellectual curiosity and strong writing skills. You must be
willing to help us tell our readers what’s happening in the world of arts, entertainment, and
lifestyle. An ideal candidate will have flair and a strong interest in Haitian traditions and
innovations, the ability to work closely with editorial teams in a fast-paced environment, and is
eager to help create interesting, surprising, delightful and high-quality stories.

Cultural Writer

The Haitian Times is looking for a South Florida based freelancer to bolster its arts and culture section. We’re looking for a writer with a flair to cover Haitian MUSIC, ARTS, FASHION AND FOOD.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Regular stories reporting on arts events, artists, musicians, Regular enterprise pieces analyzing and exploring the vibrant art and culture in South Florida
  • Develop deep sources within the Haitian arts/music community.
  • Expected to have multiple story pitches at each budget meeting
  • Needs to be a self-starter with strong drive for enterprise and a hunger to get published
  • Should have strong writing skills and be able to tell great, compelling stories, as well as broader topics
  • Should have a strong writing voice and a developed perspective on arts and culture
  • Must be willing to use that critical perspective to offer analysis and critic of arts and culture

Haitian Times Special events coordinator

Haitian Times is looking for a social media obsessed, proactive coordinator to join and support our engagement team. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in news, the Haitian community and culture and has prior experience in social media. SM Coordinator will be expected to work 10 -15 hours a week.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage 12 monthly hybrid conversations
  • Coordinate 3 large events, including a music and food festival
  • Coordinate with internal team and external partners
  • Support our fundraising activities
  • Support our yearly gala
