NEW YORK — On a recent January day, shouts of joy pierced through the euphoria running through a small classroom at Hofstra University in Long Island as various student-athletes learned they were receiving scholarships. Some jumped out of their seats when their names were called as winners in the investment competition under Advancement of Blacks in Sports (ABIS).

With each receiving varying amounts – ranging from $750 to $2,500 – for participating in the nonprofit organization’s financial coaching program for student athletes. As each participant came forward, ABIS founder Gary Charles proudly presented a display check to them.
