It was August 2006, and we were in the doldrums of the New York State gubernatorial race. Campaign aides to then-candidate Eliot Spitzer told a group of Haitian community leaders and organizers that the meeting was pro forma because Spitzer didn’t need our vote or support. 

I sat at the now closed Krik Krak restaurant near Columbia University in Manhattan and thought, “This is the height of arrogance and hubris.” I, like the other attendees, said nothing. No one lifted a finger to help him win, and nor did the campaign care. They won as expected.
