A U.S. diplomat said Haiti must hold elections on schedule, noting that the U.S. has held elections during challenging times.

Julie Chung, the acting assistant secretary for the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs (WHA), made the comment Tuesday, during a meeting about Haiti.

Many human rights experts and opposition leaders have voiced that they’re against Haiti holding elections due to the ongoing violence.

“You don’t organize elections when it’s convenient for you, you organize them when the time comes,” Chung said. “[In] the U.S., even during the most contentious and controversial times of our history—economic downturns, protests, natural disasters, bloody civil war—elections have been held regularly.” Source
