Internationally-renowned musician Wyclef Jean is among five panelists who will share their thoughts on how Haitians can uphold Haiti’s motto, L’Union Fait la Force (Unity Makes Strength), during a virtual discussion on Haitian Flag Day.
Organized by The Haitian Times, the event — titled “Unity in the community: Can we uphold ‘l’Union fait la force’ in 2021 and beyond?” — will take place on May 18, at 1 p.m. ET.
Attendees may register for free to participate in real time via Zoom. The event will also be livestreamed on The Haitian Times Facebook page and available for viewing there.
Jean will be joined stateside by Garry Pierre-Pierre, The Haitian Times founder, and Dr. Yveline Felix, historian and author based at Oberlin College. In addition, two leaders of Haiti-based organization — Dave Fils-Aimé, founder of Basketball to Uplift the Youth, and Nedgine Paul Deroly, founder of Anseye Pou Ayiti (Teach For Haiti) — will round out the discussion about unity.
“Every year as Flag Day approaches, we proudly display this symbol of freedom and sovereignty that came about through unity among our ancestors,” said Macollvie J. Neel, managing editor of The Haitian Times and the panel’s moderator. “This year, with everything taking place in Haiti and the world at large, it made sense to highlight opportunities for Haitians to build on that legacy of unit today.”
“The variety of perspectives represented on this panel will certainly offer participants much to consider about unity as we move forward,” Neel added.
