Naomi Osaka was named Sportswoman of the Year during the 21st Laureus World Sports Awards, held virtually Thursday.
The Laureus awards are based on an athlete’s performance in their sport and their impact on society. The members of the Laureus World Sports Academy chose Osaka over five other candidates.
Osaka won the 2020 U.S. Open and 2021 Australian Open. She has also been speaking up against racial injustice and police brutality on Black people.
