Nonprofit Sant La has launched a course this week to teach Haitian-Americans how to use Zoom, email, mobile banking and search engines.
“Sant La is concerned that members of the Haitian community will be disenfranchised economically and civically by the digital divide,” a Sant La news release noted. “To address this widening gap, Sant La, with the support of the Miami Foundation, has created this education program to introduce participants to the critical tools needed to bridge the digital divide.”
Held at Sant La’s headquarters in North Miami, An n Pale Tek (Let’s Talk Tech) has already reached the maximum of 10 participants for the 3-month program. The one-hour course is being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“The pandemic has revealed that technology will be a driving force in the COVID-induced new normal,” said Gepsie Metellus, Sant La’s executive director. “We’re excited about this program’s potential and confident that it will contribute to information literacy, digital equity and digital citizenship in the community we serve.”
Sant La is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower, strengthen and uplift the Haitian-American community in South Florida by keeping them informed. The group said in a news release that over the past 10 years, it has become clear its clients weren’t as skilled in technology as others are. The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the need and made it an urgent matter.
That is an excellent initiative. Kudos to you Sant la!
