The Dominican Republic will start putting up fencing along its border with Haiti in the second half of this year, President Luis Abinader said during a presentation to Congress on Saturday.

“In a period of two years, we want to put an end to the serious problems of illegal immigration, drug trafficking and the movement of stolen vehicles,” Abinader said.

The fence will be double-sided, have facial recognition cameras, sensors, and infrared systems. Source

Pediatrician shot dead fighting off kidnappers

Dr. Ernst Paddy, a pediatrician, was shot dead on Feb. 28, 2021.

Dr. Ernst Paddy, a pediatrician, was shot in the head during a kidnapping attempt in front of his clinic in Canape Vert, Port-au-Prince on Sunday. Paddy was 63. 

A vehicle pulled up in front of Paddy’s Nissan. Bandits stormed out of the vehicle then attempted to carry him off. Dr. Paddy fought to push off the bandits, so they shot him dead. 

Another person who was with Dr. Paddy was not kidnapped, contrary to initial reports. Source

Social media manager for politicians and celebrities starts news outlet

Phanord Cabé, a social media manager to Haiti government officials and others, has launched a news outlet, Hebdo 24

Cabé, 28, manages social media for several government officials, members of the opposition, Radio Télévision Caraibes, musicians and other celebrities through his own company Cabe Solutions. 

“The adventure starts, the dream of rapidly becoming a news outlet people refer to in Haiti,” Hebdo 24 writes in a note. “A news outlet that will not get caught up in neither propaganda nor in populism but will rather be on the side of the population who asks only to be well informed.” Source
