Sevilla vs Barcelona – Copa del Rey: Sevilla vs Barcelona

Sevilla and Barcelona will go head to head at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan this Wednesday night in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie, a match between the two favourites remaining in the tournament.

This game could go a long way to determining who wins the competition, but there’s even more than this year’s Copa del Rey title at stake.

This is a test of two quite different sporting projects, with Barcelona looking to win what Ronald Koeman has described as their best chance of a trophy and with Sevilla looking to build on the Europa League triumph secured in Julen Lopetegui’s first season as coach.

It won’t be easy for Barcelona since they’re missing so many players, with Sergino Dest, Ronald Araujo, Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto, Philippe Coutinho, Ansu Fati, Miralem Pjanic and Martin Braithwaite all injured.

Yet they still have Lionel Messi and he should be extra fresh, after he didn’t come on until the second half of their LaLiga Santander win over Real Betis on Sunday.

Sevilla, meanwhile, are without Lucas Ocampos after the injury he suffered on Saturday night, while full-backs Marcos Acuna and Jesus Navas are absent with physical issues too. Papu Gomez could be set to start in Ocampos’ place if Lopetegui looks to have more control. Continue reading
