Scabies outbreak strikes children in Haiti

Different parts of Haiti are seeing outbreaks of scabies, mainly among children. People began posting pictures and videos of children with the skin disease on social media last week, according to TripFoumi Enfo.

The white brownish scabs can be easily treated, said Dr. Philippe Desmangles. However, the doctor said, residents are making it worse with home remedies.

“Scabies is a simple disease that’s aggravated by all the bad junk patients administer themselves,” said Desmangles, who has been infected three times and treated with medicine.

Dr. Reginald Boulos, a public health official, posted on Twitter that some Gonave Island residents haven’t received medical treatments. Source

UN gives Haiti $20 million for elections and constitutional referendum

Haiti has received $20 million from the United Nations to organize elections and the constitutional referendum. Mathias Pierre, the delegate of Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe, announced the funding via Monday. 

“First contribution of the “basket fund,” Pierre said.

Experts have cautioned against holding elections because of political unrest and the kidnapping crisis. Members of the opposition are trying to overthrow President Jovenel Moïse on Feb. 7 an ongoing debate that could aggravate the insecurity crisis, experts said.

Elections are scheduled to start on Sept. 19 and the constitutional referendum on Apr. 25.

Women’s affairs minister appointed to also oversee social affairs and employment

Marie Giselhaine Mompremier was appointed as minister of social affairs and employment on Jan. 25, 2021.

Marie Giselhaine Mompremier was abruptly appointed as the minister of social affairs and employment, immediately after Nicole Altidor was fired by presidential decree on Monday.

Altidor was appointed into the role in March 2020.

Mompremier is also the minister of women condition and rights. Source
