Opposition asks UN to help remove Moïse in February
Opposition leaders have asked António Guterres, the general secretary of the United Nations, to help them remove President Jovenel Moïse from power because they claim that his term ends in February, according to a letter released Monday.
“February 7, 2021, will spell the end of this tyrannical, bloodthirsty regime. From that date, a new era will begin in Haiti,” the letter reads. “The United Nations must not encourage a president to violate his country’s constitution.”
A presidential term in Haiti lasts five years. Moïse won the election in November 2016 but didn’t start leading the country until February 2017. He insists his term ends Feb. 7, 2022, but others believe his term ends this upcoming February. Source
