Erling Haaland scores landmark goal and sets goal record

He may only be 20 years old, but Erling Haaland is continuing to write football history. The Norwegian scored Borussia Dortmund’s 200th Champions League goal in the 3-0 home victory over FC Brugge and netted his 15th and 16 goals in Europe’s elite club competition. Nobody has reached that figure more quickly or a younger age.

Superior: BVB dominated the stats with a higher shot count (21-2), pass completion rate (87% versus 85% for Brugge), possession share (52%) and tackle win rate (also 52%).

Goals glut: Borussia Dortmund have found the opposition net 20 times in their last seven competitive games – an average of almost three goals per match.

Landmark goal: Erling Haaland’s opening goal was the 200th time Borussia Dortmund have scored in the UEFA Champions League.

History-maker: Erling Haaland – not Lionel Messi and not Cristiano Ronaldo – is the first player in UEFA Champions League history to score 16 goals in his first 12 appearances in Europe’s premier club tournament. Haaland broke the record set by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was much older (25) at the time of his 15th goal on 26 February 2002.

Record hunter: No Borussia Dortmund player has ever managed eight Champions League goals for the Black & Yellows. Erling Haaland notched his seventh with the opener against Brugge to draw level with Stéphane Chapuisat, Andreas Möller and Lars Ricken, who took 20, 27 and 43 appearances respectively to reach that tally. The goal that put BVB 3-0 up saw him surpass those club legends and become the outright record holder – after just six appearances! Continue reading
