Real Madrid have a growing crisis at the central defensive position as we move towards 2021, with Sergio Ramos’ future not yet decided whilst Raphael Varane and Eder Militao are desperately struggling for form.

Nacho Fernandez has long played a secondary role, and isn’t considered to being an answer to the team’s defensive issues, but the real concern is the lack of progress that has been made with regards to Ramos’ contract extension.

The Spanish defender is set to leave on a free transfer in June, unless he signs an extension, and a decision needs to be made by the club hierarchy if he will be a part of the new project at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Ramos without a contract

There is a degree of urgency to secure Ramos’ future, especially after recent results showed just how dependent Los Blancos are on him defensively. The club need to sign him to an extension as soon as possible to avoid any further doubts growing.

Florentino Perez and Ramos will handle this matter personally, between the two of them, but the longer it goes undecided there is further uncertainty. Continue reading
