Having not spent a penny for a year due to their transfer ban, made up for lost time this summer by going on the biggest spree in Premier League history.

The £253million they splashed out is more than any team has ever spent in a single transfer window before, with Germans Kai Havertz and Timo Werner the marquee signings at £90m and £53m respectively.

Veteran Brazilian defender Thiago Silva arrived on a free transfer from , with Hakim Ziyech (£38m), Ben Chilwell (£50m) and Edouard Mendy (£22m) the other arrivals.

Chelsea have had a below-par start to the season, with the high being a 4-0 win over . They lost at home to and their defending was heavily criticised after 3-3 draws with supposedly inferior rivals West Brom and Southampton.

This weekend Frank Lampard’s side travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, off the back of a 0-0 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League.
