Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse.

The justice system must find out who murdered student protester Gregory Saint-Hilaire and make them pay the consequences, Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse said in a speech on Saturday.

“Anyone who was involved in the student’s murder has to pay,” Moïse said. “We live in a country with impunity. Everybody has to play their role, the justice system in general, the police included, DCPJ (Judicial Police) — everybody. The truth has to come out about the student’s murder.”

Saint-Hilaire was shot in the back on Oct. 2 while protesting against insecurity. Fellow students who witnessed the killing at Normal Superior School accused a National Palace security guard.

Moïse also told the students, who are now protesting to denounce their schoolmate’s murder, that he understands their pain and to remain peaceful.
