Nursing student Ruth François died in a motorcycle accident on Sep. 29.

Ruth François, a 22-year-old nursing student, died after being struck in a motorcycle crash on Tuesday in Cap-Haitien, Haiti’s second largest city.

François’s classmate, Déborah Déby Pierre, is in critical condition at the hospital.

Motorcycle accidents have troubled the city in recent years.

“It’s a matter that’s devastating our youths, devastating all of us because children and adults have been victims of it,” Cap-Haitien’s Mayor Yvrose Pierre told reporter Gerard Maxineau.

The city had planned to provide dedicated routes for motorcycles back in 2018, but that implementation was delayed because of insecurity, then the novel coronavirus.
