Police Arrest 50 Suspects In Anti-Gang Crackdown

PNH, Haiti’s national police force, arrested about 50 people during Operation Terminator 1 in less than a month, agency spokesperson Garry Desrosiers said at a press conference Wednesday.
Members of the “400 Mawozo” gang were among the 50 suspects put behind bars.
Terminator 1 started Aug. 1 with the goal of reducing gang shootings, drug trafficking, and rape. In addition to the arrests, PNH seized seven vehicles, five rowboats, 26 firearms, 228,396 bullets, 1,324 kilograms of marijuana. Continue reading
Haiti Bank Injects $47 Million to Stabilize Country’s Currency

The Bank of the Republic of Haiti, or BRH by its French acronym, has injected $47 million of the $150 million needed to stabilize the country’s currency.
Jean Baden Dubois, the central bank’s governor, said Haiti’s currency value dropped for five main reasons: monetary financing, a decrease of moneymaking supplies, decline in exports, a slowdown in tourism activities, and shifting from a foreign exchange market to informal market.

UniBank and Capital Bank Sanctioned For Non-Compliance
The Bank of the Republic of Haiti, or BRH by its French acronym, has sanctioned UniBank and Capital Bank for not complying with money exchange regulations, BRH Governor Jean Baden Dubois said Wednesday.
UniBank is required to give 865 million gourdes ($7,736,997) and Capital Bank 4 million Lourdes ($35,778).
Dubois said overall Haitian banks are doing well financially despite the decline of Haiti’s currency. Continue reading
