Six in six: Sevilla have won every Europa League final they have played in
Sevilla are once again Europa League champions after beating Inter 3-2 in a thrilling final on Friday night, which means that the Andalusian side making have now achieved a record six titles in six finals.
Not even the likes of Alfredo Di Stefano’s Real Madrid or Arrigo Sacchi’s AC Milan can boast a record quite like this as Sevilla reignited their love with the Europa League after a four-year absence.
Sevilla have now won the competition six times, double the amount than the three that Inter, Liverpool, Juventus and Atletico Madrid in second place.
Eindhoven 2006
The love affair started in Eindhoven when Sevilla thumped Middlesbrough 4-0 in what was probably their most straightforward title.
The goalscorers in the final were Luis Fabiano, Frederic Kanoute and Enzo Maresca, who scored two.
However, one of the main reasons why Sevilla lifted the trophy that season was the extra-time goal scored by the late Antonio Puerta in the semi-final against Schalke. Jesus Navas also featured at the tender age of 20.
Glasgow 2007
Sevilla retained the title one year later when they overcame Espanyol in a penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2.
The hero that season was goalkeeper Andres Palop, who saved three penalties in the final shootout and even scored a last-gasp goal in the quarter-finals against Shakhtar Donetsk to ensure his side qualified for the semi-finals.
Turin 2014
Sevilla had to wait a further seven years for their next Europa League triumph, this time with Unai Emery at the helm after Juande Ramos had guided Los Nervionenses to their first two trophies in the competition.
It came against Benfica and following a tight match, the final was yet again decided on penalties, where Kevin Gameiro got the better of a young Jan Oblak.
This was also the season that produced the first Seville derby in the Europa League. Continue reading
