Cops abandon Cité Soleil, saying they don’t have the right gear
Members of the Haitian National Police (PNH) deserted their post in Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince because they don’t have the proper equipment to fight against the area’s gangs.
The officers abandoned their post in May, after a series of attacks by the gang G-9 between May 23 to May 27, the RNDDH, a national human rights organization, said in a report. One week later, one officer, Wismick Aristil was killed during subsequent gang violence.
PNH’s administrative center later told RNDDH the police officers at Cité Soleil had to leave because they lack the essential means to deal with the bandits there. “They don’t have bulletproof vests, helmets, armored vehicles, and don’t have enough handguns and military weapons,” the organization said. Cabinet officials: No invoices found for Petro Caribe expenses
Government officials said they have not been able to find proof that Petro Caribe funds were used on the earmarked projects between 2008 to 2016.
The Superior Court of Accounts and Administrative Litigation, known as CSC/CA by its French acronym, said it could not find any invoices nor contracts that prove that the USD $3 million intended to help restructure the passport system was spent on that project. The Ministry of Interior and Territorial Communities was also unable to provide an invoice for the acquisition of water filters that cost 2,058,000 gourdes.

Turkey and Haiti aim to strengthen bond with bilateral agreements
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu visited Haiti on Aug. 17 to explore possibilities for collaboration between the two countries and sign bilateral agreements.
Bilateral collaboration is an essential bridge between the two countries, Cavusoglu said.
“We hope to be able to strengthen our relationship in all possible areas, especially in the economic sector,” Cavusoglu said. Continue reading
