To protest against the “Municipal Commissions”, Haitian City halls are ransacked and burned

From Tabarre, Desdunes, Port-Salut, Léogâne, Gonaïves, Gressier, to Petit-Goâve and cities across thecountry are under protest after Jovenel Moise arbitrarily removed mayoral cartels and replaced them with supporters.

“A small group which had already blocked the commune invaded the town hall. These individuals set fire to several offices and to the marie’s equipment, ”denounced the mayor of Port-Salut, Wilson Déna.

Elected under the banner of the PHTK, the ruling party,  Déna, contacted by phone on Tuesday, pointed the finger at members of the opposition in his commune who, according to him, want to take control of the town hall.

For his part, the mayor of Port-Salut denounced the passivity of the police who “attended without reacting to acts of vandalism from the town hall”. The town councilor said that UDMO agents called in for reinforcement took control of the town hall to secure it, but the situation remains tense in the commune.

In Desdunes, in the Artibonite department, individuals attacked the complex housing the town hall. According to the mayor of the municipality, Ernst Saintphard, the protesters who demand his dismissal locked and set fire to the main entrance of the complex but did not have direct access to the town hall. Elected under the banner of the political organization OPL, Ernst Saintphardinformed the newspaper that he is now a member of the PHTK. He accuses the opposition of having ordered this attack.

For several days, the national road # 2 was blocked at the level of Mariani and Gressier. People have taken to the streets to demand the dismissal of the municipal cartel of this commune transformed into a municipal commission. Continue reading.
