Historic Gold Cup campaign shows bright future for Haiti
After a historic 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign in which it reached the semifinals for the first time ever, the future is most definitely bright for Haitian football.
Les Grenadiers proved to be the revelation of the tournament, completing a perfect group stage campaign with three wins, followed by a comeback 3-2 quarterfinal victory versus Canada in which it faced a two-goal deficit at halftime, making it Haiti’s third comeback win of the tournament. Haiti’s western part has been affected by heavy rainfall on Wednesday, July 3, leading to severe urban flooding in capital Port-Au-Prince.

Haitian Lawmaker: Gunmen Targeted His Vehicle
Haitian opposition lawmaker Printemps Belizaire said gunmen apparently targeted his vehicle Saturday.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon shortly after the deputy had attended the funeral of journalist Rospide Petion, who was shot and killed by unknown gunmen last month on his way home from reporting on anti-corruption protests. His killer has not been found, and colleagues believe he was slain for being too outspoken about the PetroCaribe corruption probe, which has implicated multiple government officials, including the president. Haitian Historian Dead at 88
Renowned historian Michel Hector passed away Friday evening at the age of 88 at his private residence in Pétion-Ville. RIght up to his death, he taught at the State University of Haiti and served as president of the Haitian Society of History and Geography and Geology from 2000-2015.
Hector trained at the École normale supérieure in Port-au-Prince and militated in the Haitian communist party during the Duvalier dictatorship before leaving for exile. He returned from exile in 1986 after the fall of Duvalier and in addition to teaching dedicated his time to supporting the trade union movement through its Ulrick Joly foundation. Continue reading
Caricom gets involved in the Haitian crisis
A high-level delegation from Caricom will be visiting Haiti to assess the crisis in the coming days according to an announcement made by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne.
The Haitian crisis was raised in the presence of President Jovenel Moïse at the 40th Ordinary Meeting of the Caricom Conference of Heads of State and Government held in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia earlier this week. Moïse had recently called for mediation from the Organization of American States (OAS) to facilitate a national dialogue regarding the crisis. Continue reading
Rapper Youssoupha Wows at Historical Park Concert
French rapper Youssoupha wowed the crowd with his performance at the Historical Park on July 5 in what’s considered to be the first megashow of the summer and his first-ever performance in Haiti.
Youssoupha came on stage wearing a Grenadiers jersey and made the crowd dance on “Dreaming”, “Go away” and “For love.” He also paid tribute to Kerry James and declared his love for the hit “Se pa pou dat” by Alan Cavé. Continue reading
Death threats made against TV reporter in Haiti
TV reporter Ginen Orius has become the subject of death threats from armed individuals in Gran Ravin, a neighborhood on the southern outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince. The threats come after Orius was looted by armed individuals on June 20 at his home and followed by the house being set on fire July 2.
The violence against the media in Haiti has increased since the anti-government demonstrations launched in June and the murder of journalist Pétion Rospide. Continue reading
