Research Suggests Haitians Can All Use More Sleep

Over percent of adults report that they get less than 7 hours of sleep on a normal night. This high number of sleep-deprived people worries sleep scientists and doctors alike as they learn more about just how important sleep is for our overall health. As our technology and sciences develop, new medical advancements are saving lives at a staggering rate – yet humans as a whole are reportedly getting less sleep over the years. And research not only shows that we need to be getting more sleep, but better quality sleep as well – otherwise all of our vast medical advancements may not be as effective.

Lack of Sleep Leads to Unhealthy People

People with a lack of sleep (less than 7 hours per night) are at a higher risk of a number of health-related issues. Some of the major risks include heart diseases, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and mental disorders such as anxiety. It’s nearly impossible to be a healthy person if you’re not consistently getting at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Fighting off these chronic diseases is much more difficult for the sleep-deprived because the body’s immune system is not working at full strength, thus limiting its ability to fight off the causes of disease.

Improper sleep doesn’t just impact long-term health issues either. Studies have shown that in the days following a lack of sleep, people are at a higher risk of drowsiness, memory/cognitive impairment, getting into an automobile accident, or being injured at work. There is no alternative to “make up for” a lack of sleep either. Bedtester.com explains that once you miss out on your 7 hours per night, you cannot sleep extra the next night to get back all that you lost. The best way to ensure that you do not fall below the nightly threshold for sleep is to take the time to develop a routine that ensures you will get the proper amount of rest. As a part of this routine, make sure to put in the effort to find a bed that helps you fall asleep fast and stay asleep through the night. This can go a long way in making sure that you’re getting a quality night’s sleep.

Why We Need Sleep

There are still a lot of questions regarding why human beings need a certain amount of sleep. The general idea behind it is that sleep is the time the body takes to recuperate lost energy, and repair any mental and physical damage that occurred during waking hours. Humans are, by nature quite busy – and we use our bodies and minds quite a bit as we work, play, and perform our daily tasks. This does a number on us, and by going into the state of sleep, we can get ready to do it all over again. By not getting enough sleep, we interrupt the recovery process, and do not allow our bodies to be completely ready for waking action.

There a number of tremendous benefits to getting enough sleep every night, and not surprisingly they contradict virtually every negative aspect of sleep deprivation. By getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night (preferably 8-9) our ability to fight off diseases and ailments like cancer, stress, anxiety, obesity, and memory loss drastically increases.

In order to be the healthiest version of yourself, put sleep at the top of your priorities. Research some proven ways to increase your quality of sleep, and make simple lifestyle changes in order to get into the habit of maximizing your sleeping hours. Taking care of our bodies is one of the most important things we can do throughout our lives. Working out, eating healthy, and reducing stress are all important, but those can be rendered irrelevant without the proper amount of sleep. So turn the lights off, climb into bed, and get those valuable hours of sleep in order to be happier and healthier.
