Advocates gather in Haiti for key meeting on HIV/AIDS

Executive Director of the Antigua and Barbuda HIV/AIDS Network Eleanor Frederick is in Haiti for a high-level meeting which will, among other things, discuss key scientific and policy content from the 22nd International AIDS Conference held in Amsterdam in July.

Organized by the Geneva, Switzerland-based International AIDS Society (IAS) the two-day meeting will be held on November 28 and 29 at the Karibe Hotel in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. It’s being held under the theme: Retention in Care – PrEP – Tuberculosis, Science and Community in the HIV response in the Caribbean.

Frederick, who for more than a decade has been a champion for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Antigua and Barbuda, was invited to participate as a Speaker at the meeting which has been fully endorsed by the Haitian Ministry of Health and Population.

Specific topics to be covered over the two days include retention in antiretroviral (ART), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) implementation and co-morbidities (TB /  MDR-TB).

Scientific research on these specific topics will be discussed for policy and programme improvements in the Caribbean region.

The meeting is part of regional meetings organized through the IAS Education Fund to address the gap between science and implementation.

“While the HIV response has made considerable progress, this gap remains a persistent challenge for effectively responding to the epidemic globally,” the organizers said.

The IAS Educational Fund was established in an effort to make dynamic, scientific fora more accessible to IAS Members and their communities. Continue reading
