A US Coast Guard crew intercepted a shabby sloop carrying some 84 people on Sunday (October 28).
The illegal migrants were crowded onto the 42-foot boat which was discovered 30 miles southwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
According to a report on the US Coast Guard’s website, Commander Randall Chong in a statement said the boat was “dead in the water” and passengers lacked life jackets and other safety gear.
He said the migrants were given food, water and medical care aboard the US Coast Guard vessel before they were repatriated on Tuesday (October 30) to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
