In honor of Haitian Flag Day, hip-hop icon Wyclef Jean released a new video for his single “Sak Kap Fet,” which means “what’s up” in Haitian Creole.

“Sak Kap Fet” is the first song and video off of the artist’s latest project, Wyclef Goes Back to School. The song features Staten Island, New York-based artist Kofi Black. Just like Jean, Kofi comes from an immigrant background.

The video and Wyclef Goes Back to School shows us that Wyclef’s quest to honor Haitian pride and uplift youth from all backgrounds that he started in 1998 is coming full circle.

In the late 1990s, Jean ignited a resurgence of Haitian pride on Haitian flag day, when he proudly walked across the Grammy’s stage with the Haitian flag on his back.

”They’re the only ones I love,” Jean said in a 1998 interview with Haitian Times founder Garry Pierre-Pierre, referring to the Haitian youngsters. ”If I can help them be proud of themselves, tomorrow they’re going to go to school with a different self-esteem, and it’s going to help them accomplish what I accomplished.”
