Haiti uncovers fraud scheme in education sector
Haiti’s Education Minister Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet says the authorities have uncovered a multi-million dollar fraud involving 68 school principals.
The minister said that following an investigation by his ministry, funds estimated at more than three million gourdes had been discovered missing.
The Coordinator of the General Directorate of the Ministry of Education, Jean Nelson Pierre, said the school principals will be questioned by law enforcement agencies and risk being sentenced to jail.
Haitian-born MP Emmanuel Dubourg in Miami to temper influx of Haitian refugees
Haitian-born member of Parliament Emmanuel Dubourg is travelling to Miami in response to the influx of Haitian asylum seekers to Canada in recent months.
His trip comes as both the prime minister and Liberal cabinet ministers have sought in recent days to more forcefully address the major spike in illegal border crossings this summer, which has strained public resources and tested traditionally widespread support for Canada’s immigration system.
The Montreal-area MP was recently appointed to a new federal-provincial task force focusing on how to handle the thousands of people, many of Haitian origin, who have crossed illegally into Canada since June in the hopes of seeking asylum. READ MORE
