Haiti’s interim president names new Electoral Council
Interim President Jocelerme Privert has named a new Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) as the country moves towards staging presidential elections, Caribbean National Weekly reported.
In a television broadcast on Sunday night, he said that “the nine members of the electoral council have already been chosen.
Revival of the electoral process is essential for a definitive resolution to the institutional and electoral crisis,” he added.
Opposition parties had called for the establishment of an interim administration to oversee fresh elections in the country and had taken to the streets protesting the outcome of the first round of balloting on August 24 last year as well as preventing the staging of the second round of the presidential elections on Jan. 24 this year.
Haitian National Police to strike for two days
The Haitian National Police (PNH) announced a two-day strike on Mar. 15 and Mar.16. It’s not clear how many police officers are participating in the strike. They are protesting their working conditions, and requesting familial aid, where officers are killed in the line of duty.
