New Haiti prime minister to be announced in coming hours

The new Haiti prime minister will be announced in the next 24 hours, interim-President Jocelerme Privert said Wednesday. The presidents of both parliament chambers are scheduled to meet before the Privert appoints the next prime minister.

Drug arrest made at border

Suspect, David Martínez Gómez was arrested for drug possession after going through a checkpoint near the Dominican town of Azua, members of the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and the Directorate of Intelligence (G-2) of the Dominican Army said. Gomez, a resident of Lascahobas, Haiti, was apprehended with 145lbs of narcotics that were hidden in a compartment of a sports utility vehicle.

Customs patrol officers attacked

A group of customs patrol officers were attacked Sunday by “heavily armed individuals” while on smuggling surveillance. The officers were traveling from Mirebalais to Lasachobas. During the incident, two officers were seriously injured from wounds sustained by a machete, and a resident was injured by a stray bullet that hit her in the leg.

The reason for the attack is unclear, Commissioner Ovilmar Wisdom of the Central Department, said, however it is suspected the attack was a diversion to allow for the passage of trucks with smuggled goods.
