Increase in Zika virus cases
The Ministry of Public Health announced a dramatic increase in Zika virus cases. From Jan. 24 – Jan. 30, 204 new cases were reported. Since the confirmed outbreak of Zika in Haiti, 329 people in total have contracted the virus.
Transitional president to be elected Feb. 14
The Haitian National Assembly will elect a transitional president on Feb. 14. The transitional president will not be allowed to stay in power for more than 120 days from the day he takes office. Potential candidates had until Thursday afternoon to register.
New elections for a permanent president are scheduled for April 24.
