Haiti presidential campaign kicks off with one candidate

Friday Jude Celestin confirmed he will not be launching his campaign, nor will he participate in the Jan. 24 election until recommendations made by the independent electoral commission are implemented. Celestin had initially refused to participated in the runoff until an independent panel to review the Oct. 25 was established.

263 schools excluded from universal education program for fraud

After an internal audit, it was decided that 263 schools would be excluded from the universal free program because of fraud. School directors from the excluded schools have been accused of taking money for children not enrolled in the program.

Haiti qualifies for Copa America in June

Haiti beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 on Friday to qualify for the centenary edition of the Copa America in June.

Haiti had the best of a tight game against their Caribbean rivals but it took them until the 83rd minute before they got the goal that counted, Yahoo Sports reported. “Pascal Millien carried the ball 50 yards from deep inside his own half before his cross-cum-shot was missed by two defenders, a Haitian forward and goalkeeper Jan Williams before sneaking into the far corner of the net.”

Sean Penn hosts annual Help Haiti Home gala

Actor Sean Penn held his fifth annual Help Haiti Home gala Saturday night at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. Big name stars including Madonna, Justin Bieber and Leonardo DiCaprio came out to support the benefit.
