Antilles Mizik, the popular Haitian record store in Queens is closed. Philippe Lavelanet, President and CEO of one of the Haitian Community’s leading independent retailers of Haitian music, announced that Mario de Volcy has purchased the store with another partner, that will carry a new name, and new management. The store is set to open its doors later this month. The new store will sell Haitian and non-Haitian music, paintings, and other items that could attract more customers. Also the new store plans to offer the local community a selection of over 10,000 CD’s, DVDs, videos and books, as well as magazines, periodicals, a full newsstand, accessories, wide range of personal electronics, toys, games, and lifestyle items. Opening a music store of any kind can be a challenge these days; however, it is particularly true when opening a Haitian record store that has suffered tremendously from bootlegging.
