Fans, family members and fellow entertainers remembered singer Edith Lefel for her seemingly effortless singing style, her warm humor and her triumphant career in the French Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. For over 20 years she had brightened people’s lives with the richness of her personality and her voice. Her courage and love have been an inspiration to all who called her friend, and the most beautiful women in Martinique where she grew up after leaving her homeland Guiana. The mellow-voiced singer received the ultimate accolade in Paris when she was invited to perform at the legendary Olympia music hall. Concerts across Martinique and Guiana have been held since last Friday. Lefel committed suicide on January 20, 2003 caused apparently by depression.
