Haiti: Dog Eat Dog World

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI – Dogs are everywhere in Haiti: under parked cars, dead on the roadside, roaming the streets. Not only are they everywhere but they’re hungry. You find dogs climbing the piles of trash on the street corners with their noses buried looking for just about anything to relieve their hunger.

Many nodding heads and smiles filled the room to hear Haitian-American media maven and now author Karen Civil tell her story. Karen Civil Day was hosted at the Barclays Center on Feb.10 featuring a meet and greet and a customized SnapChat filter where die-hard fans got exclusive access to a signing of Civil’s new book Be You.

Wearing her black sparkling sequin jersey dress labeled with her last name, Karen spoke passionately about her new playground in Petion-vile and how ecstatic she is about finally being able to materialize her dream of giving back to her parents’ native country.

Haiti Cultural Exchange Kicks Off Fall Series “Revolisyon”

It’s no new fact that the Haitian Revolution is a historical event that not just Haitians, but many people of color are truly proud of and grateful for. It led the Western hemisphere to a time of change where suppressed groups, mainly Africans, started movements seeking freedom.

The Haiti Cultural Exchange (HCX), a nonprofit aimed at preserving Haitian culture through education, arts and public affairs, launched their Fall/Winter program titled “Revolisyon” with a kickoff event at the Brooklyn Public Library, featuring an open reading by Haitian-author Gina Ulysse.
